(Defender of the Crown)
Sensible Soccer
Speedball 2
Syndicate
Lemmings
Pinball Dreams
Cannon Fodder
Shadow of the Beast
Shadow of the Beast Shadow of the Beast
Another World
Another World بر بازیها و طراحان بسیاری از جمله Ico، Metal Gear Solid، Silent Hill و Flashback تأثیر گذاشت.
Worms

Amiga; From Pixels to GTA
The Amiga introduced itself as a multimedia machine from the very beginning. In the second half of the 1980s, with advanced graphics rendering and exceptional audio samples, it established itself as a powerful tool in the film industry. But perhaps in game design, it was brilliantly pioneering.
The Amiga was an excellent gaming machine and created significant impacts worldwide. Its influence in gaming was so extensive that new game titles were either developed on Amiga and then ported to other platforms, or Amiga versions were released first.
For gamers using single-digit color palettes and buzzing sounds on platforms like the Atari 2600 or Spectrum, the difference between the old world and the Amiga world was dramatic.
The Amiga's Place in Gaming History
The Amiga occupies a strange place in the natural history of gaming. Mouse usage and window-based operating systems may have been pioneered by Apple in 1983, but for teenage gamers worldwide in the 1980s, the Amiga was our first encounter with what we now take for granted as the standard method of interacting with a computer: point and click.
Gaming on the Amiga was a revelation. Not only because games had suddenly made a quantum leap in complexity, but because in doing so, we began to see what we now call "game design and narrative."
Commodore was an American company, but British developers built its world. In Scotland, DMA Designs created Lemmings. From Sheffield, Gremlin Graphics gave us Zool. Team 17 in Yorkshire produced amazing games including Worms, Superfrog, Body Blows, and Alien Breed. Perhaps the most iconic Amiga game was Sensible Soccer.
As the last truly dedicated gaming computer, the Amiga holds a special place in the memories of video game history. The vast majority of owners bought it purely for playing games.
Top 10 Amiga Games
1- Defender of the Crown
Released in 1986 by Cinemaware, this game was a true showcase of the Amiga's graphical capabilities. Set in medieval England after the death of King Richard the Lionheart, players assume the role of one of four Saxon knights fighting to overthrow the Normans and claim the crown. Buyers at the time were stunned by the incredibly large sprites, digitized images, and cinematic presentation that were unprecedented on home computers. The game blended strategy, resource management, and action through various mini-games like jousting, rescuing damsels, and castle sieges. Selling nearly a million copies, it set a new standard for production values in video games and was later re-released in various forms.
2- Sensible Soccer
Released in 1992 by Sensible Software and published by Renegade Software, Sensible Soccer revolutionized football games with its top-down view and deceptively simple graphics. The key to its success was the intuitive control scheme: a single button and directions allowed for ground passes, lofted shots, curling shots, and long clearances. Unlike its contemporaries that allowed endless dribbling, Sensi made it difficult to keep the ball and change direction, forcing players to develop a realistic passing game. It sold over 1.5 million copies in the UK alone, and many fans still consider it the most realistic football game ever made. Its enhanced version, Sensible World of Soccer (SWOS), released in 1995, featured every professional club and national team in the world with detailed player statistics and a full management mode.
3- Speedball 2
Released in 1991 by the legendary Bitmap Brothers, Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe was a violent, futuristic sports game played from a top-down perspective, blending handball, rugby, and street brawling. The pitch was significantly larger than its predecessor, and improved horizontal scrolling provided more space for tactics. Players could collect coins and tokens to upgrade their team and sign new players. Management elements like choosing a manager and enhancing player stats added depth. Icons above players' heads indicated their positions (W for Winger, D for Defence, etc.), enabling effective tactical passing. Speedball 2 demonstrated that sports games could be both fast-paced and strategic.
4- Syndicate
Released in 1993 by Bullfrog Productions (creators of Populous), Syndicate was an isometric strategy-action game that put you in charge of a corporate syndicate in a dark, dystopian future. You commanded a team of heavily armed cyborgs, fighting rival corporations and expanding your territory across chaotic cities. The game blended tactical shooting, resource management, and world simulation. The "Persuadertron" device allowed you to mind-control citizens and enemy agents, turning them to your cause. Syndicate was controversial for its graphic violence and bleak atmosphere, but its precise controls and excellent user interface made it an engaging and memorable experience.
5- Lemmings
Released in 1991, Lemmings was developed by DMA Design (the studio behind Grand Theft Auto) and published by Psygnosis. It was a revolutionary puzzle-strategy game where you had to guide a group of small, defenseless creatures (lemmings) through dangerous obstacles to an exit. Each lemming walked automatically, and you could only save the required number by assigning one of eight special skills (like digging, building, blocking) to specific lemmings to clear a safe path for the rest. Lemmings is one of the best-selling and most ported games of all time, with an estimated 20 million copies sold across various platforms. Its clever design, dark humor, and addictive gameplay have made it one of the greatest games of all time.
6- Pinball Dreams
Released in 1992 by Swedish studio Digital Illusions (later known for Battlefield), Pinball Dreams is one of the best pinball simulations of all time. The game featured four tables with distinct themes: Ignition (space and rocket launches), Steel Wheel (trains and the Old West), Beat Box (music industry), and Nightmare (graveyards and ghosts). The ball physics were remarkably realistic, and the Amiga's graphical power allowed for detailed tables with vibrant colors. Pinball Dreams spawned two sequels, Pinball Fantasies and Pinball Illusions, and is considered a cult classic among pinball simulation fans.
7- Cannon Fodder
Released in 1993 by Sensible Software, Cannon Fodder was an isometric strategy-action game about war, featuring dark humor and a cynical view of conflict. You commanded a squad of soldiers through natural obstacles like jungles, deserts, swamps, and underground bases. The game was famous for its theme song ("War has never been so much fun") and its violent scenes. Despite the small character graphics, Cannon Fodder had deep and addictive gameplay, and critics considered it one of the best strategy-action games on the Amiga. Selling over 100,000 copies in the UK alone, it was one of the best-selling Amiga titles in its genre.
8- Shadow of the Beast
Released in 1989, Shadow of the Beast was developed by Reflections Interactive and published by Psygnosis. It was a side-scrolling action platformer that was considered revolutionary for its stunning graphics. The game tells the story of Aarbron, a man kidnapped as a child and magically corrupted into a monstrous warrior-servant for the evil beast lord Maletoth. His memory returns when he witnesses his father's execution, prompting him to seek revenge. Shadow of the Beast featured up to 12 layers of parallax scrolling and a rich color palette, making it visually unmatched at the time. However, critics complained about its extreme difficulty and focus on style over substance. It was released at £35 (extremely expensive at the time) and even included a T-shirt in the box.
9- Another World
Released in 1991, Another World was designed by Éric Chahi and published by Delphine Software. It is not only an important Amiga game but a milestone in video game history. The story follows Lester, a young scientist who is transported to a dangerous alien world after a failed experiment and must fight for survival. Chahi developed the game alone over about two years, creating all animations in vector form to reduce memory usage. Another World was praised for its innovative use of cinematic effects in real-time and cutscenes, winning awards such as Most Innovative New Game of the Year from Electronic Gaming Monthly. It sold around 1 million copies and was one of the first 14 titles added to the video game art exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 2012. Another World influenced many games and designers, including Ico, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, and Flashback.
10- Worms
Released in 1995, Worms was designed by Andy Davidson and published by Team17. It was a turn-based strategy game where each player controlled a team of small worms armed with massive artillery. The player who kept the last worms alive after several rounds of slaughter won. The game became hugely popular for its unique humor, creative weapons (like the Holy Hand Grenade and exploding sheep), and extensive customization. The Director's Cut version, released in 1996, added better graphics, more sounds, and 14 new weapons, and is considered the best Worms game on the Amiga. Worms became a major franchise and is one of the most successful turn-based strategy games in history.
"The Amiga was a machine that led games from sprite pixels to a world of solid 3D design and magnificent 2D."
The games on this list are titles that had undeniable impacts on the future of the gaming industry — a multi-hundred-billion-dollar industry where up to $2 billion is invested in new titles like the latest GTA series.
